Parklands Residential Age Care Facility
by Project Services (QLD Gov)

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

Parklands Residential Aged Care Facility is one of eleven major aged care projects in a $120M redevelopment program by the Queensland Government. The Capital Works program responds to the Commonwealth Aged Care Requirements for 2008 and the continuing commitment by Queensland Health to provide quality care. A key objective of the program is to facilitate a process enabling purpose-built environments which enhance each resident's quality of life. Project Services was commissioned to develop a modular design for the new aged care facilities. The modular design was underpinned by a best practice Model of Care and specific environmental design elements to respond to the particular cognitive, behavioural and social needs of the residents. As a flexible kit of parts the modular design incorporates key functional relationships and spatial allocations, yet is able to be reconfigured to meet geographical, clinical and resident profiles for site specific requirements. Parklands is a 70 bed facility comprising 40 high care, 10 psychogeriatric and

20 dementia beds. Located within the Kirwan Health Services Campus at Thuringowa the facility is among the first to be completed within the program. The design philosophy is one of a friendly, inviting non-institutional environment that supports domestic style habitation whilst maintaining the privacy and safety of its residents. Design features of Parklands include single bedrooms with shared ensuites; a hierarchy of private, public, clinical and administrative spaces; natural light; mixed mode ventilation; a choice of living and activity spaces; and easy access to shaded and landscaped courtyards. Way finding is integrated within the facility by destination points and visual cues of colour, texture, smells and the strategic location of artwork throughout the facility. The facility is designed to anticipate the residentsí requirements, providing an environment that enables staff to assist residents in maintaining independence and dignity and to provide personal and social support in the residentís daily activities.
